The team behind Athena Financial

Three people in Vancouver, advising individuals, families and business owners across British Columbia and Ontario. Small enough that you always know who you are talking to.

Why Ken started the firm

Ken started advising in 2013 inside the usual model: targets, products, a fixed menu of what could be recommended. The work he found most useful was rarely the work that model rewarded. People kept arriving with the same avoidable problems, missed deductions, the wrong mix of salary and dividends, insurance nobody had read since the day it was signed, and the same sentence: nobody ever explained this to me.

Athena Financial exists to answer that sentence. The firm is deliberately small so the person who builds your plan is the person who reviews it two years later. It works alongside your accountant rather than around them, explains the fee before anything is agreed, and says no to a product when no is the honest answer.

The name was chosen before the first client, and it still sets the standard for the work. More on that next.

Who is Athena?

Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom. Less often remembered is that she is also the goddess of peace and of handicraft, of the patient, made-by-hand work that holds up over time. That combination is the whole idea: clear thinking, careful construction, and the quiet that comes from knowing your affairs are in order.

Her gift to the city was the olive tree. Not gold, not weapons, a tree, planted once and feeding generations who would never meet the person who planted it. That is what good financial planning looks like. The decisions you make in your thirties are the shade someone sits in decades later.

Athens is the city where she is best known, so closely tied to her name that one brings the other to mind. Athena Financial wants the same association with financial health in Vancouver: if someone in this city is wondering whether their money is actually looked after, we want ours to be the name that comes to mind.

Our vision for you

Inspire Growth

Money decisions compound. We want yours pointed in a direction that grows quietly for years.

Empower People

You should understand your own plan well enough to explain it to someone else. That is the test.

Transform Lives

A tax structure or a policy is not the point. What it makes possible for your family is.

And how do you get paid?

Mostly through commissions from the products we put in place, and in some cases fees you pay directly. Either way you see the numbers in writing before you agree to anything.

It is a fair question to ask early, and most firms in this industry avoid answering it on their website. We answer it in full on a page of its own. See how we're paid, including what it costs you and whether it affects what we recommend.
